Island Swimming has been in the spot light of the Canadian swimming in the last few years because of their biggest and brightest star, Ryan Cochrane. In the last year Cochrane became the first Canadian to break the fifteen minute mark in the long course 1500 meter freestyle and most recently smashed the senior men’s short course record in the same event by almost fifteen seconds. Cochrane’s coach Randy Bennett has spent the last five years not only helping develop his young star, but he and his staff have been building one of the strongest age group clubs in the country.
What is your coaching philosophy? Have you taken the time recently to reflect on this? For all coaches this is a valuable exercise. One of the things that successful people have in common is a vision and once they have that vision their work is all directed toward seeing that become reality. As a coach your philosophy is the vision of what you want to become and the environment that you want to create to best benefit the athletes who are a part of your program.

As soon as I got them I wanted to see what they could do for one of my chronic elbow droppers. I gave them to him, told him to strap them on and swim the set. I fully expected the paddles to be similar to regular paddles, increased surface area – increased speed (with the benefit of the EVA claim). What I got instead was a swimmer who could barely swim, let alone make the intervals of a challenging pull set.
BEIJING, China, July 4. WITH the Olympic Trials in Omaha less than a year away and Beijing creeping closer, there will be much speculation concerning which athletes will be favored in which disciplines. And, as was the case in 2004, there will be much speculation pertaining to the schedule of Michael Phelps and which events he opts to tackle.
He is following the footsteps of US swimming ace Michael Phelps, who toured Beijing earlier

Swimming is an extremely technically dependent sport. When speaking with top coaches almost all of them agree that the item that is top on their priority list in developing swimmers is technical efficiency. The question is how does a coach develop technical abilities in their swimmers?
In the last few years the Vernon Kokanee Swim Club has proven to be one of the premier age group clubs in the country. How do we view swimming? This is often shaped not only by our personal experience in the sport, but also by how we are informed. Two of the biggest ways that coaches, swimmers and parents alike become informed about swimming is through the internet and through instructional videos. In the past few years Glenn Mills’ work has become some of the best readily available information on the sport of swimming there is. Whether it is through his work as Swimming World’s technical advisor, his website at
www.goswim.tv or through the videos that he has created, Mills has developed some of the best swimming material in the market today.

This is the 6th year I have done the MS Society Thetis Lake Open Water swim. There is a choice of a 1.5 km, 3 km or 5km swim. I always choose either the 3km or the 5km based on the training cycle I am in so this year I chose the 3km distance.
When watching different coaches on deck you can tell a lot about their personalities and how they coach. Some are loud and very emotional; some are quiet and very calm.
