SYDNEY, Australia – Colin Gilbert of Kamloops, B.C., Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alta., and Penny Oleksiak of Toronto each won a bronze medal on Tuesday at the 2015 Australian Age Championships swimming competition.

In the men’s 400-m freestyle for the 16-year-old age group, Gilbert was involved in a battle for the silver medal with Australian Daniel Jacobson. Jacob Vincent of Australia took the gold in 3:56.05, Jacobson followed in 3:59.05 and Gilbert was third in a personal best 3:59.30.

It was Gilbert’s second medal in two days. He was also third in the 200-m butterfly on Monday.

‘’This has been a really great meet so far,’’ said Gilbert. ‘’It’s a great opportunity to test yourself against some of the best swimmers in the world in your age group. And the atmosphere and public interest in this meet is amazing.’’

In the girls 100-m freestyle for 15-year-olds, Smith also earned a second medal and was also close to the runner-up position. Her time was 56.32 just behind silver medallist Julia Hawkins of Australia at 56.07. Hawkins’ compatriot Gemma Cooney took the gold in 55.45. Sarah Darcel of Victoria was seventh.

‘’It wasn’t a personal best time but I’m still happy with my race,’’ said Smith, second on Monday in the 200-m backstroke. ‘’The big thing I want to work on this week are my turns and also just learn from this meet. They do some things a little differently here which I think can help me.’’

Oleksiak, a double winner on Monday, was third in the 200-m backstroke for 14-year-old girls.

Other Canadian finalists were Margaret MacNeil of London and Darcel fourth and fifth in the 200-m butterfly while Stephen Calkins of Calgary was seventh in the 50-m freestyle for 16-year-olds and finished in the same position in the 4X100-m freestyle relay with Gilbert, Josh Zakala of Kelowna, B.C., and Philip Kay of Ajax, Ont.

Canada has fielded a 10-member youth team for the week-long event.
